They are ugly, they are parasites and they attack dead or weakened birchtrees. You could say they are the necrophiles among sponges... Yet I find them adorable. Just can't help it.
Ha! I remember those very well! We used to look for them and "write" stuff on the soft velvet underside of them. The forest near my house had lots of them.
These are not the mushrooms I would have with a fine mooseburger... *lol* Maybe use them as a plate but not to eat, since they with time almost gain the texture of wood.
